Evaluation of Satellite Precipitation Estimates over the South West Pacific Region

چکیده

Rainfall estimation over the Pacific region is difficult due to large distances between rain gauges and high convection nature of many rainfall events. This study evaluates space-based observations South West Region from Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA) Global Satellite Mapping Precipitation (GSMaP), USA National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center morphing technique (CMORPH), Hazards group Infrared with Stations (CHIRPS), Aeronautics Space (NASA) Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG). The collocation analysis (CA) used compare performance monthly satellite precipitation estimates (SPEs). Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble (MSWEP) was as a reference dataset each SPE. European Centre Medium-range Weather Forecasts’ (ECMWF) ERA5 reanalysis also combined Soil Moisture-2-Rain–ASCAT (SM2RAIN–ASCAT) perform triple CA six sub-regions Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua Guinea (PNG), Solomon Islands, Timor, Vanuatu. It found that GSMaP performed best low gauge density areas, including mountainous areas PNG (the cross-correlation, CC = 0.64), Islands (CC 0.74). CHIRPS had most consistent (high correlations errors) across all in area. Based on results, recommendations are made use SPEs Region.

Evaluation of three high-resolution satellite precipitation estimates: Potential for monsoon monitoring over Pakistan

Multi-sensor precipitation datasets including two products from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) and estimates from Climate Prediction Center Morphing Technique (CMORPH) product were quantitatively evaluated to study the monsoon variability over Pakistan. Several statistical and graphical techniques are applied to illustrate the noncon...

Evaluation of Satellite Rainfall Estimates over the Chinese Mainland

Benefiting from the high spatiotemporal resolution and near-global coverage, satellite-based precipitation products are applied in many research fields. However, the applications of these products may be limited due to lack of information on the uncertainties. To facilitate applications of these products, it is crucial to quantify and document their error characteristics. In this study, four sa...

Evaluation of Eta Model seasonal precipitation forecasts over South America

Seasonal forecasts run by the Eta Model over South America were evaluated with respect to precipitation predictability at different time scales, seasonal, monthly and weekly for one-year period runs. The model domain was configured over most of South America in 40 km horizontal resolution and 38 layers. The lateral boundary conditions were taken from CPTEC GCM forecasts at T62L28. The sea surfa...

Hydrological Utility and Uncertainty of Multi-Satellite Precipitation Products in the Mountainous Region of South Korea

Satellite-derived precipitation can be a potential source of forcing data for assessing water availability and managing water supply in mountainous regions of East Asia. This study investigates the hydrological utility of satellite-derived precipitation and uncertainties attributed to error propagation of satellite products in hydrological modeling. To this end, four satellite precipitation pro...
